WHAT IS A DIRTSURFER?

The Dirtsurfer inline board is a revolutionary new product targeted at snowboarders and surfers that wish to ride when the surf isn't up or the powder isn't there. They were designed in Australia and made available in Canada in the Spring of 2003!

Traditional three and four wheeled skateboards, or
mountainboards, incorporate a chassis or truck system that
moves independently from the deck, while surfboards and snowboards completely lean with and are at one with the rider; there is no secondary truck system.

HOW DOES A DIRTSURFER REALLY COMPARE TO A SKATEBOARD, SURFBOARD OR SNOWBOARD?

Surfing and snowboarding both have the common
characteristic of that great fluid-turning motion and the two-wheeled in-line design of the Dirtsurfer truly mimics
this motion. The patented steering geometry is initially stabilized by rider weight and further stabilized by the progressive gyroscopic stability instilled by increasing speed of the two in-line 20" wheels. However, this is a real compromise because there is always an in-built disparity and design complication between the chassis and the deck. Surfboards and snowboards completely lean with and are at one with the rider. There is no secondary truck system. The Dirtsurfer shares that beautiful free-flowing feeling because it too leans with the rider without a compromise between a separate deck and chassis. Further, the Dirtsurfer in-line concept eliminates speed wobbles, allowing the rider to travel at faster speeds more akin to those experienced by surfers and snowboarders. In fact, much faster than surfers and snowboarders! The Dirtsurfer actually gains control and performance as you travel faster!

CAN YOU RIDE A DIRTSURFER ON FLAT GROUND?

Dirtsurfer boards skate on the flat faster and with less energy than a skateboard, but you have to practice the technique first. Virtually anyone can ride a Dirtsurfer successfully within a few minutes by starting on a grass hill. However, skating them on the flat takes more practice but once mastered, they become a great means of transport around town.

WHICH FOOT DO YOU PUSH WITH, TO SKATE A DIRTSURFER?

You have to push with your front foot because the frame is slightly lower at the rear and they feel really weird to push with the rear foot. Also, the deadman's brake button HAS to be under the rear foot. It's not as difficult as you might think to get used to the 'old style' skate pushing.

DOES THE FRONT WHEEL TURN OR PIVOT?

Yeah, the front wheel turns via a low, forward mounted, double-bearing pivot point, but most turning is initiated by actual leaning rather than turning, i.e. like a motorcycle turns without the front wheel actually turning much either. So, all you have to do is lean and it automatically turns.

HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO RIDE A DIRTSURFER?

Although they've only got two wheels, Dirtsurfers are deceptively easy to ride thanks to their patented steering geometry. As soon as you apply weight, the front wheel stabilizes and only turns when you lean. We have plenty of people riding Dirtsurfer boards easily without snowboard or surfing experience. If you start on a grass hill, you should be riding the board successfully within a few minutes. To get really good on them obviously takes practice, but just to ride them initially is much easier than learning to snowboard or surf.

HOW DO YOU STOP A DIRTSURFER?

They have a deadman's brake (button under the rear foot), which activates when you fall off, to stop the board from rolling away. You can also use this as a gentle brake by angling the rear foot. A second spring is included with each board should you wish to increase the deadman's braking power.
Each board also comes with either a V-brake (GP model) or Disk Brake (Road Racer and Flexi model) operated via a rear calf lever. Simply apply pressure rearward on the lever with your calf and the V-brake activates by slowing the rear tire like on a bike.

CAN YOU USE A DIRTSURFER WITH A KITE OR SAIL?

Dirtsurfer boards work really well with a sailboard rig! Just bolt the uni into the 8mm hole in the foot plate. Your front foot goes right in front of the uni. The board is really stable at speed with a rig and handles beautifully.
Kitewing's Skimbats are also wonderfully compatible with Dirtsurfer boards! Kiteboarders have finally found a perfect land based board to replicate their on-water rush. The in-line design produces that wakeboarding edge feel and Dirtsurfer's unbeatable high speed stability instills the confidence needed to go for it.

HOW FAST ARE DIRTSURFERS DOWNHILL?

The current unofficial Dirtsurfer speed record is 117 kph (70mph) The speed limit so far is purely dependent on the hill, so the top end achievable with narrow slicks on a long, mountain road is anyone's guess. Suffice to say it will be extremely fast! Not recommended for anyone but pro riders in leather racing suits!
